Still, here it is confirmed in the Los Angeles Times from late last night:
The Kings are believed to be discussing a multi-player package, with forwards Alexander Frolov and Dustin Brown and goaltender Mathieu Garon among the names being discussed. Dean Lombardi, the Kings' general manager, declined to comment...

The Kings attempted to land the All-Star goaltender before the trading deadline last season, but the Panthers balked at all deals. Now they may be forced to make a deal since Luongo will be an unrestricted free agent after next season. The Panthers have received calls from a handful of teams and interest is expected to increase at the NHL draft in Vancouver this weekend.

That may lead to a bidding war, orchestrated by the high-profile Keenan.Which is exactly the scenario I laid out a few days ago and exactly the scenario Keenan wants.

Also in pursuit of Luongo — and not far behind the Kings — are the Vancouver Canucks, who have been rumoured to be offering Dan Cloutier and Todd Bertuzzi.

Blake back with LA; Parrish going Wild; Lalime to Chicago, and ...

Rob Blake is returning to where his career began. Having retired in 1972, Duff's chances at eternal enshrinement seemed long gone. His inclusion was even more unlikely in 2006, with a seemingly impassable logjam of moderns stars including recent omissions such as Glenn Anderson, Dino Ciccarelli and Sergei Makarov, as well as first time eligible nominees Doug Gilmour, Mike Richter and Pavel Bure.

While his inclusion probably came as a surprise to the new generations, his exclusion may have surprised older generations just as much.

Dick Duff was known as one of the best "money players" of all time. He tasted the sweet smell of Stanley Cup success six times during a 18-year NHL career. He always seemed to reach his peak in the playoffs where he earned his reputation as one of the greatest clutch playoff performers of all time.

Dick himself had an easy explanation to why he always did so well in the playoffs:

" Many times, the regular season seemed to long to me. Toward the end of those long seasons, I couldn't play hard if the score was lopsided in the early periods. As long as it was close, I was in the game. I was fired up if the score was tied or one-goal apart. In the playoffs you can see the end in sight. The playoffs are a real test of desire and skill. Many times a player will score 30-40 goals in a regular season, but all too often he'll get those goals after the game has been decided. I feel it's more important to get the game-deciding or big goals. "

Duff was a small and fast player. His was also the ultimate team player. He never made an All-Star team or won an individual trophy; wins and Cup titles were more important to Duff.

Maybe his unselfishness came from the fact that he was the sixth oldest child in a family of 13 children. Born February 18, 1936, Terrance Richard Dick Duff was a hockey prodigy in the hockey hotbed of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. By the age of sixteen, Duff moved to Toronto to attend St. Michael's College. In 1953-54, his second year with St. Mike's, Dick led the Majors in scoring with 35 goals and 75 points, adding 120 penalty minutes. During his third and final year of junior with St. Mike's Majors, Dick led the team in scoring once again with 53 points, but also made his NHL debut, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 10, 1955 for the first of three games with the parent club. Later that season, the Majors beat the Regina Pats to collect the Memorial Cup for 1955. Duff led the Majors in scoring. He was also noted as a gifted student.

He played in three games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1954-55 but didn't make the jump to the pros for real until the following season. Dick was placed on a line together with Tod Sloan and George Armstrong. The trio scored a fine 156 points between them. Dick continued with his fine play in his first years with Toronto, scoring 119 goals in the first five years, including a career high 29 goals and 63 points in 1958-59.

That 1958-59 season really established Duff's reputation as a clutch player. The Leafs were struggling to make the playoffs that campaign, but Duff's strong finish seemingly willed the Leafs into the final playoff spot on the final night of the regular season, with Duff scoring the winning goal. The Leafs momentum led them to a Stanley Cup finals appearance against the dynastic Montreal Canadiens. Duff scored 7 pointed in 12 games, including an overtime winning goal against Jacques Plante in the finals.

Duff played a pivotal role in the Stanley Cup championship won by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962, playing alongside fellow Hall of Famers George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Tim Horton, Red Kelly, David Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Bert Olmstead, Bob Pulford and Allan Stanley. Although he missed more than a quarter of the regular season suffering from a broken ankle, Dick scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal on April 22, 1962, as Toronto edged Chicago 2-1 to win their first Stanley Cup since Bill Barilko and his teammates celebrated in 1951.

The Maple Leafs repeated their Stanley Cup celebration in 1963, with Dickie Duff setting an NHL record by scoring two goals in the first 1:08 of game one of the final on April 9, 1963. The Leafs beat the Red Wings 4-2 in that contest.

By no means was Duff the most spectacular player on the ice, but when the game was on the line, Duff was the go-to guy. Though small he was scrappy and determined. He had a little bit of Glenn Anderson or Claude Lemieux in him with his flare for the big playoff goal.

But when Punch Imlach stepped in as a coach for the Maple Leafs, Dick's production fell off from 29 goals to 19 the following season, and it continued at that level. As a result of his decreased point production he spent more and more time on the bench. He was used sparingly and his future in Toronto grew bleaker.

At this point Dick entered a second phase in his career. He was traded to the NY Rangers in a huge seven player deal on February 22, 1964. A deal that involved the star Andy Bathgate. Things didn't go so well in New York, and after 43 games (20 points) and 10 months later Dick found himself on his way to Montreal for Bill Hicke

Duff had been on the Habs want list for some time as he seemingly always played well against Les Canadiens, but GM Frank Selke could never obtain him from the Leafs. When Sam Pollock took over the GM's job, one he was quick to retrieve the noted warrior from Manhattan after the slow start. At first it looked as if Duff's career was winding down even in Montreal after only scoring 9 goals (16 points) in 40 games for the Canadiens. But coach Toe Blake got some superb performances from Dick in the 1965 playoffs where he scored 9 points, helping Montreal win the Cup. After that the revitalized Duff became a vital cog in the Canadiens machinery. In the 1969 playoffs he finished third in playoff scoring behind only Jean Beliveau and Phil Esposito. In his five years with Montreal he helped the team win the Cup on four occasions.

At the start of the 1969-70 season Dick had a minor surgery and reported late to the Canadiens. When he returned to action, he was used sparingly and only scored one goal and one assist in 17 games, hardly great numbers for someone who at that time ranked 19th on the all-time NHL scoring list. He became a King in Los Angeles early in 1970 and he greeted the news with elation because he knew he'd be able to play regularly. He didn't have a great first season with the Los Angeles Kings and admitted that he wasn't in proper shape.

" I think after winning the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1969, I just spent too much time on the banquet circuit. I never got into shape and some minor surgery kept me out of training camp altogether. By the time I got through the summer and the surgery, I was exhausted and out of shape. "

LA's patience with Dick was non existent and they traded him to Buffalo Sabres on December 1, 1970 together with Eddie Shack for Mike McMahon. He provided some fine leadership to a young Sabres team that had an exceptional rookie in Gilbert Perreault. The following season Dick played another 8 games (1971-72) before deciding to hang up his skates for good..

With over 1000 NHL games and six Cups he had achieved more in the NHL than most players will ever do. He scored 283 goals, 572 points and participated in 7 All Star games.

While his inclusion in the Hall at this time may be a bit controversial, Duff is very appreciative of honor.

"I'm very happy to be selected, and it is extra special for me given that today is my mother's birthday -- if she were still alive she would have been 101," said Duff. "I'm happy for all of the guys that played in and around Kirkland Lake and appreciate my teammates in the NHL who taught me how to win at the highest level of the game."

Kings continue to pursue Luongo

This is hardly new news, as it's been speculated all week that Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi has been in trade talks with the Florida Panthers for star netminder Roberto Luongo.

Today's blog sort of goes all over the place... You've been warned.

Ahem...

In today's news, online casino Golden Palace gives $25,000 to charity in exchange for William Shatner's kidney stone.

Like I said... you've been warned.

Once again, I'm driving the highways of South Florida and see a car engulfed in flames. This is an every-other-day occurrence for me. I think I see more car fires (or the charred remains) then I see fender benders! I've owned some real rust buckets with leaking fuel lines, oil on the manifolds, but have never had anything catch fire. Am I lucky or something?

So let's all take the time to read "Fireproofing Your Car" and if we all take some preventative measures, we can get to work on time.

The Lightning beat the LA Kings last night, 4 to 1. It was a good game. To quote the St. Pete Times: "They threw checks. They threw punches. They got angry. When shoved, they shoved back. When denied a chance, they didn't hang their heads, but instead, put their heads down and worked for another."

I forget who said it. Maybe it was Esposito. But some time earlier in the season someone said, "We shouldn't have Eastern Conference teams play against Western Conference teams in the regular season." I believe the reasoning was that such games did not help a team climb the ranks of their own conference as much as an inner-conference game and that there's some "element of surprise" removed if the two teams face off again in the conference playoffs. I couldn't agree less. I find the occasional East vs. West game refreshing. Rivalry games, like Tampa vs. the Panthers, can certainly be fun. But in my opinion the occasional West coast game can be just as fun. Too bad Tampa isn't going up against Calgary in the regular season this year. There's some potential for revenge there.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kingsflinn.blogspot.com/2006/07/todays-blog-sort-of-goes-all-over.html' title='Today's blog sort of goes all over the place... As the Christian community brings its worship to God, it must start with a recognition of who we bring our worship to. In fact, our "acts" of worship will only be meaningful if we know who we are performing them for.

Do you know the God of 1 Kings? In the 18th chapter we read of the prophet Elijah's showdown with a king and his nation. Elijah says, "I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left." Meanwhile, King Ahab has rejected God, and the nation of Israel is teetering between worship of God and the worship of the false god Baal. To show the world that God is God and Baal is not, Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a barbeque duel -- first oxen to be consumed by the heavenly fire of team God or team Baal is the winner. To raise the stakes, the oxen are drenched in water.

Of course, Baal's prophets beg their god in vain. But the almighty God responds to Elijah's prayer, and the fire of the Lord consumes the oxen, the wood, the stones of the alter, the water that had been poured -- everything.

When the people saw this, they fell prostrate (face down) and declared, "The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!

A similar reaction to God's sungular power is recorded in Matthew 14. Jesus sends his disciples out into a boat while he goes off to pray. On the lake, the wind is blowing and the boat drifts out from shore. Sometime in the evening, Jesus is ready to join his men, and to do so, walks out on the water to the boat. Just as you and I would be, the guys in the boat were a little nervous, thinking Jesus was a ghost. The disciple Peter cries out, "Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water." Peter jumps out of the boat, and just as Jesus is walking on the water, so too does Peter. But Peter sees the waves around him and begins to doubt. Jesus reaches out, saves Peter, and climbs into the boat with him. Immediately the wind calms, and Jesus disciples see Jesus for who He really is:

"Truly You are the Son of God!"

The God of 1 Kings and the Jesus of Matthew 14 are the same Father and Son today. They are powerful, majestic, and unique among all the people and things that vie for our attention. When we keep this perspective about God, our worship can not help but be more genuine, more filled with love, more pleasing to the God who deserves and demands this kind of worship.

King’s Square

Finally, somewhere special.

On my birthday, we found a playground near Norman's workplace which
also has the best fish and chips shoppe we've found in London. It is an exceptional place. The children are friendly and not prone to unpredictable violence.

Norman and I have been trying to figure out what makes this play park so special. Because the kids are very nice and friendly. Interesting combination of Turkish, biracial, British and Italian kids. It is surrounded on all four sides by council housing. And is next to a square filled with cheap, but delicious cafes with lots of outdoor seating.

The play park is very well designed and surrounded by lovely gardens and an ancient grape arbor under which the children must pass to go from climbing frames to the water jets. The water jets (in all different configurations) are activated by children stomping on pressure plates.

So, Winston and I go there whenever we don't have a violin commitment - or in inclement weather. We have lunch with Norman and play until he finishes with work. Unfortunately, the adults aren't much for connecting with. But, the children are lovely.

The other day we were playing with a group of kids. Their mothers were so grateful, they sent over something they called, "Turkish dinner." It was the most awesome, flavourful cous cous balls - easily eaten by hand. I'm trying to figure out how to make it. They were so filling and scrumptious. So - at least we know the adults can be friendly in their own way.

“Turkish Dinner?”
8 oz. cous cous
12 oz. broth
2 tsp. tomato paste
1 small onion minced
3 tsp. paprika

5? cloves garlic - minced
2 handfuls chopped parsley - minced
1 tsp. black pepper
hint of lemon juice

Directions
1. Bring broth and minced onions to a boil with tomato paste, paprika, pepper.
2. Add couscous and minced garlic.
3. Stir, stir and stir until all mixed. Remove from burner.
4. Let cool, add fresh chopped parsley and hint of lemon. Stir.
5. Once cool, form into tight balls (palm sized - which can be eaten by hand over a serviette.)

Quick. Impressive. Tasty. Easy to eat whilst standing about chatting.

Ron Artest: A Sacramento King

The Sacramento Kings have acquired the services of Ron Artest in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Peja Stojakovic, it was announced by Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

kingsflinn new articles for Sunday, April 16, 2006<a href="http://richardjgibson.blogspot.com/2006/04/dream-double-bill-12-king-of-kings-and.html"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">Dream Double Bill # 12 'King of Kings' and 'The Gospel According ...
According to Nicholas Ray’s biography; ‘An American Journey’ by Bernard Eisenshitz ‘King of Kings’ was originally to be titled ‘Son of Man’, and how they registered the title with the MPAA as Cecil B DeMille had not registered the title ...

<a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12336276/from/RSS/"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">Kings fans bid adieu to Robitaille
LOS ANGELES - APRIL 15: Luc Robitaille #20 of the Los Angeles Kings takes NHL's all-time leading scorer among left wings retiring after 19 seasons.

<a href="http://www.cowsinthebarn.com/archives/001003.html"/ rel="nofollow" target="_new">A Meal Fit For A King Of Kings
We're cooking up a storm for a small but lovely Easter dinner.
